Speaker Peggy Mathers from the Asian Art Museum:
“The Language of Flowers in Asian Art.”

“My mother and father introduced me to every museum they could. Museums are treasure houses” they said. That resulted in two degrees in art history and the most enjoyable retirement “job” I can imagine-docenting at the Asian Art Museum. My mother was a gardener so it was destiny for me to become a Marin Master Gardener. My focus was on soil health and water conservation. I became a docent in residential gardens in Marin representing UC. This talk allows me to combine my two joys.” The Language of Flowers in Asian Art showcases the expressive power of flowers in the arts and cultures of Asia. Since ancient times flowers have been cultivated in gardens and represented in art.
The properties of flowers have come to symbolize both human and divine qualities: plum blossom, cherry blossom, chrysanthemum, tulip, and rose – and the messages they convey.
