April SFGC Meeting / Luncheon

Join us for our April Meeting and Luncheon at the Presidio Golf & Concordia Club.

Come Meet our Patron Saint as told through the expert eyes of Dr. Sarah Jacobs, Curator Botany Department California Academy of Sciences

Alice Eastwood (1859–1953) was a pioneering, largely self-taught botanist renowned for her heroic rescue of 1,500 botanical specimens from the burning California Academy of Sciences building following the 1906 earthquake. She served there as the Curator and Head of the Botany Department for over 50 years, from 1894 until her retirement at the age of 90. Since 1959 the SFGC has made annual scholarship awards to students at City College of San Francisco Horticultural and Floristry Department in her name.

In 1971, the club established the Alice Eastwood Garden in GG Park in her honor.

Sarah Jacobs, PHD Curator in the Botany Department of the California Academy of Sciences.

Sarah follows in the footsteps of Alice as the core team of scientists that collectively curate the Academy’s collection of over 2.3 million specimens. She knows Alice and can’t wait to share!

Enjoy a warm afternoon of community, conversation, and inspiration in one of San Francisco’s most elegant settings. This spring gathering offers members the opportunity to connect, share updates, and enjoy a beautifully prepared luncheon. Program details and featured guests will be announced soon.
